Plot summary
When a message asking "Doctor who?" is broadcast from the planet Trenzalore, thousands of aliens gather in orbit around it. The Church of the Papal Mainframe raises a force field over the planet, and its head, Tasha Lem, sends the Doctor and Clara to search the surface for the source. They trace it to a human settlement called Christmas, where a crack in reality runs through the clock tower. The Doctor works out that his own people, the Time Lords, are trapped in a pocket universe, and that they are waiting for him to say his true name so they will know it is safe to come back. The other ships dare not attack while he might let the Time Lords out, and he will not leave, because they would burn the planet to stop their return.

- Matt Smith had to wear a wig to reproduce the Doctor's signature hairstyle because his role in the film Lost River required him to have a buzz cut.
- Karen Gillan returned as Amy Pond for the first time since "The Angels Take Manhattan" and, like Smith, wore a wig, in her case one made from her own hair, after shaving her head to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy.
- Scenes were shot during this episode's production for both the preceding and following stories: Matt Smith filmed a scene for the first episode of Series 8, and Peter Capaldi was filmed for his cameo in "The Day of the Doctor".
- Smith and Jenna Coleman filmed on location in Cardiff at Lydstep Flats, a site previously used in Series 1 as the Powell Estate, the home of Rose Tyler and her mother Jackie.
