Plot summary
The Eleventh Doctor lands on a human-inhabited planet where more than four thousand people aboard a space liner are trapped in strange electrified clouds. The clouds are governed by a machine belonging to Kazran Sardick, the wealthiest man in Sardicktown, who will not let the ship land safely. Kazran is the son of the man who built the cloud machine, and the Doctor decides to travel into his past and change it. He arrives on an earlier Christmas Eve and meets Kazran as a young boy. The Doctor summons a shark that swims through the clouds and fog, and when it cannot return they take it to a cryogenics storeroom, where Kazran's father keeps people in storage, including a woman named Abigail.

- The sleigh pulled through the air by a flying shark was actually a rickshaw that crew members rocked back and forth while a wind machine mimicked flight, and a miniature model was used for shots underneath rather than computer-generated effects.
- Michael Gambon was cast as the miserly Kazran Sardick, but casting director Andy Pryor did not believe he would be available and was surprised when Gambon accepted the role.
- The episode's model shark was given the codename "Clive" to keep the plot of the Doctor Who Christmas special a secret.
- Classical singer Katherine Jenkins made her acting debut, accepting the part shortly before her 30th birthday in June 2010, and writer Steven Moffat did not know she had no acting experience.
