Plot summary
Kamal Mehra, a self-made Delhi businessman, watches his conglomerate AyKa slide toward bankruptcy while his bonds with his wife Neelam and their two children fray. Ayesha runs a successful corporate travel firm in Mumbai, yet her marriage to Manav Sangha leaves her deeply unhappy, and his wealthy family regards the Mehras with disdain. Kabir, meanwhile, is being schooled to take over AyKa even though he longs to fly commercial aircraft. Kamal and Neelam invite relatives and friends aboard a ten-day Mediterranean cruise to mark their thirtieth wedding anniversary. The guest list includes the Sood family; the parents hope to arrange a match between Kabir and Noorie Sood, whose father Lalit could invest enough to clear the company's debts. On board, Kabir meets Farah Ali, a British-Pakistani dancer in the ship's entertainment.

- Ranbir Kapoor dropped out of the film over scheduling conflicts and was replaced by Ranveer Singh; his cousin Kareena Kapoor then had second thoughts and left the production, saying she could not leave her family for the required three months.
- Madhuri Dixit, Tabu and Raveena Tandon were all approached to play Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh's mother, but every one of them turned the part down because they did not want to play a mother.
- Zoya Akhtar spent a whole year persuading Anil Kapoor to sign up, and her brother Farhan also spoke to him about the role; Kapoor finally accepted when Javed Akhtar approached him on his daughter's behalf.
- The entire song "Gallan Goodiyaan" was shot in a single five-minute take, which required detailed planning and choreography that the cast rehearsed before filming.
- Aamir Khan's voiceover as the family dog Pluto was meant to be a surprise but leaked before release; Javed Akhtar had provided the voiceover first and, after watching the film weeks before release, asked Aamir to take over.
