Plot summary
Gabriel Caine leaves a Georgia prison and teams up with his partner Fitz. The two head for Diggstown, a town near the prison whose people are devoted to boxing. Almost everything in Diggstown belongs to John Gillon, once the manager of Charles Macum Diggs, the boxer the town is named for. When Fitz hears that Diggs knocked out five opponents in a single day, he claims to know a fighter who could stop ten in one day: 'Honey' Roy Palmer, a YMCA supervisor of 48. Gillon stakes $100,000 against that claim, and Caine puts up the money on his side. The men settle the conditions, with a day counting as 24 full hours and Diggstown fighters taken from the surrounding area of Olivair County. Palmer agrees, reluctantly, and begins training.
