Plot summary
In Swabia the villages of Oberrieslingen and Unterrieslingen are hostile neighbors. What keeps them apart is a church and a cemetery that both communities have had to use since the Middle Ages, and the arrangement has led to disputes ever since. Among the people living there are Maria Häberle, Christine Häberle, Klara Häberle and Gottfried Häberle, together with Karl Rossbauer, Peter Rossbauer and Elisabeth Rossbauer. Into this setting comes Howard Jones, a foreigner who has found out that something in the village church is of special value. He wants to buy it, and the villagers are not prepared to let it go.
