Plot summary
Michael Bosworth, an intelligent convict awaiting trial, escapes when his lawyer Nancy Breyers smuggles a gun into a courtroom hearing; he snaps a guard's neck and slips away with her, then leaves her behind and drives off with his brother Wally and their partner Albert. Needing a hideout until Nancy rejoins them, the three settle on a house in Utah that carries a For Sale sign, the home of Tim and Nora Cornell. Tim is a Vietnam veteran who has come to the house hoping to reconcile with Nora, from whom he is separated; her children May and Zack are with them. One by one the family becomes prisoners of the three men. FBI agent Brenda Chandler, unconvinced by Nancy's story that Bosworth held her at gunpoint, puts surveillance on her.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- One scene about eight minutes long was shot at Brigham Young University's empty football field in Provo, Utah, and involved an outdoor confrontation between FBI agent Brenda Chandler (Lindsay Crouse) and Nancy Breyers (Kelly Lynch). It was allegedly cut because test audiences read lesbian overtones into their relationship.
- The film moved to TriStar with Christopher Cain to direct and Mickey Rourke to star. Cain left and was replaced by William Friedkin, who eventually decided to make The Guardian instead, at which point Rourke asked Michael Cimino to direct.
