Plot summary

In 1789, Pierre Manceron is the master cook of the Duke of Chamfort. A meal for the duke's Parisian friends is his chance to prove himself worthy of a kitchen in Paris. Alongside the ordered dishes he serves a small pastry of his own, mushroom and potato, and the guests take the potato as an insult and mock him. The duke dismisses him for refusing to apologize. Manceron retreats to his father's house, looted by starving citizens, with his son Benjamin and his old friend Jacob. Louise appears at the door and asks to become his apprentice. He turns her down, saying cooking is a man's profession, and she waits outside in the rain all night until he gives in and finds her a talented cook.
