Plot summary
Doña Carmen lives in the hills of Costa Rica and works to keep her tribe's traditional ways alive. Her only granddaughter, Esmeralda, is 12 and pregnant by Don Claudio, a 70-year-old shaman who has laid his claim to the girl, and Doña Carmen must soon marry her off to him. When a visiting anthropologist brings his young son to the community, Esmeralda befriends the boy, and the meeting sets the modern world against the ancient one.
