Plot summary
Chuck Toedan is the host of Live or Die, a television game show in which condemned prisoners take part for the chance to be granted a reprieve. Those who fail are executed on live television. The program is a success, though protesters object to its cruelty. On one episode Chuck puts the head of the Spumoni crime family to death in humiliating fashion, and the family sends an assassin named Luigi after him. Luigi's task turns personal once his mother, who is senile, wanders onto the set and ends up a contestant. Chuck has also met Gloria Sternvirgin, a protester who challenged him on a talk show.
