Plot summary
Andrew Bagby and a close friend grow up together in San Jose, California, where Bagby acts in the friend's amateur movies and helps pay for them. Bagby becomes a doctor and takes a residency in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. His parents and friends are uneasy about his relationship with Shirley Turner, a doctor from Newfoundland nearly thirteen years his senior, and the long-distance arrangement frays. Bagby ends it in November 2001, and days later he is found shot to death in a state park. Turner goes home to St. John's, Newfoundland, where she is arrested as a suspect and says she is pregnant with Bagby's child. The friend begins gathering old home movies and interviewing Bagby's parents, David and Kathleen, for a film meant for the son who will never know his father.

- After Kurt Kuenne mailed a copy of Dear Zachary to each of the over 400 members of Canada's Parliament as part of a campaign to change federal bail laws, MP Scott Andrews of Avalon introduced Bill C-464, known as "Zachary's Bill", after attending a screening.
- Dear Zachary was only ever meant to be shown to the friends and family of Andrew Bagby, but as events unfolded Kurt Kuenne decided to release it to the general public.
- Kuenne gave away all the profits from the film to scholarships set up in the names of Andrew Bagby and his son Zachary.
