Plot summary
In Fairbanks, Alaska, thirteen-year-old Yup'ik girl Vanessa Lemor works a summer job at an ice cream shack after Philip Georgey, her true love, ends their relationship. She resolves to win him back and enrolls at Nichols Academy, the prep school where his family is legendary, as its only minority scholarship student. Philip returns from a summer abroad fluent in French and popular, while Vanessa lands at the bottom of the school's social order with the misfits Hercules, Samantha, and Madeline, who goes by Nothing. As her student advisor, Philip preaches individuality and social consciousness. Named the only freshman captain in the Snowstorm Survivor competition, an event modeled on Native games from the World Eskimo Indian Olympics, Vanessa assembles a team of her fellow outcasts.
