Plot summary
Robert Leaf teaches at a college and plays the accordion, and he and his wife Vina raise their two children, Pandora and Erasmus, aboard a houseboat in San Francisco. Robert has won a Pulitzer for his poetry and holds the arts above everything, but Erasmus, who is eight, has no ear for music, cannot make out colors, and handles numbers like a prodigy. When the boy corrects a set of figures at a bank, reporters take notice, and his parents, wanting him to grow up like any other child, decide he should see a psychiatrist. Pandora and her friends pay him to do their math homework, and the money becomes airmail stamps for the letters he writes to the French movie star Brigitte Bardot.

- Writer Nunnally Johnson said he had not wanted to do the film, and was persuaded only because James Stewart (whom he called Jimmie) would sign if he wrote it, and Henry Koster would get a job if Stewart signed.
- There was some talk that Disney would option the film rights and cast Bing Crosby in the lead role, but 20th Century-Fox bought the rights and the part went to James Stewart.
- Billy Mumy was cast on the recommendation of James Stewart's wife, who taught a Sunday School class that Mumy attended.
- There was some doubt that Brigitte Bardot would appear in the film, but she relented and her scenes were shot in three days in Paris.
