Plot summary
Years of border war between Hobeika and Salma end in victory for Emir Nesib, and the two rulers agree that the desert between their lands, the Yellow Belt, will belong to neither of them. Amar's sons, Saleh and Auda, are raised in Hobeika as surety for the peace, and Auda grows up caring for books and knowledge rather than war. An American geologist, Thurkettle, reports that oil lies beneath the Yellow Belt, and Nesib pictures hospitals, schools and roads for his people. The oil sits in unclaimed sand, so Amar's agreement is needed, and Amar refuses. Nesib sends Auda to his birth father to make the case, while Saleh waits for a chance to rejoin Salma.
