Plot summary
In 1962, Jim Shepard wins his town's Halloween Run, a yearly contest in which teenage boys chase Sawtooth Jack, a creature that comes up out of the corn, and keep it from the church until midnight. He takes the Harvesters Guild's prize and leaves town for a new life. A year later his younger brother Richie, excused from the Run because his family has already won, is determined to join it. He takes an interest in Kelly, a newcomer, and his parents try to talk him out of going. Riley, a classmate, beats him up and takes his belt. Ahead of Halloween, the town's boys are shut in their rooms without food for three days.
