Plot summary
Ron Woodroof is an electrician in Dallas who also rides rodeo. He smokes, drinks, uses cocaine and sleeps with women, and he is hostile toward gay people. After a work injury puts him in the hospital, the doctors test his blood and tell him he carries HIV and has about thirty days left. He rejects the news at first, then comes to believe it may be right, and begins reading the research available on the disease. The drug AZT exists only in clinical trials in the United States, so he pays someone at the hospital for doses of it, and his health worsens. He also meets Rayon, a trans woman who is addicted to drugs and has the same virus.
