Plot summary
New at Indian Hills High School in Agoura Hills, California, Marc Hall is befriended by Rebecca Ahn, a classmate taken with celebrity culture. At a party at her house, she walks the street checking unlocked cars, and Marc, uneasy, goes along. She later tells him she has already entered a vacationing neighbor's house and asks who he knows that is out of town. He names a wealthy acquaintance, and Rebecca drives them there, finds an unlocked door and leaves with a handbag like Lindsay Lohan's, cash and the keys to a Porsche. They spend the money on luxury items. Chloe Tainer brings Marc and Rebecca to a nightclub, where Rebecca introduces Nicki Moore and her sister Sam, and Marc spots Paris Hilton and Kirsten Dunst.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Cinematographer Harris Savides was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2010 and the illness forced him to exit the production, where he was replaced by his longtime camera operator Christopher Blauvelt; the two are jointly credited. Savides died in October 2012, shortly after photography wrapped, and the film was dedicated to his memory.
- Rapper Kanye West, contacted for song contributions, recommended that Reitzell, who was working closely with Coppola to find contemporary music that would fit the film's setting, use Frank Ocean's then-unreleased "Super Rich Kids".
- Some scenes were filmed inside the homes of the celebrity victims themselves, and others at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, California.
