Plot summary
The United States has just entered World War II, and in Hollywood Michael Curtiz, a Hungarian-born director with nearly two hundred films to his name, is finishing Casablanca. The authorities assign a political official to oversee the production and press him to sharpen its propaganda message and build public support for the war in Europe, while political censors keep pushing for script changes. Curtiz rewrites the story as the shoot nears its end, set on making the film his own way. His sister has stayed behind in Hungary, where she is in danger, and his estranged daughter Kitty reappears after a long absence, bringing family tension onto the set.
