Plot summary
Noah Moran turns eighteen a year after her father Jonás died, while her boyfriend Nick Leister is away at a law internship in San Francisco. Her friend Jenna brings up their graduation party, and Nick appears without warning. Their parents, married to each other, are set against the couple. Noah enrolls at a local college, where she meets her roommate Briar, a student who had paused her studies for two years before starting. Nick begins work at his father William's law firm alongside Sofía, another intern. He rents a flat near campus, and when Noah takes it as a home for both of them, his hesitation sends her out the door. His mother Anabel, gone from his life for a decade, phones him again and again.
