Plot summary

Ben Chase's courtroom success rests on a willingness to manipulate the judicial system for his clients, and he has begun to show signs of serious alcoholism. He represents Martin Thiel, a member of a wealthy, prominent family, on a murder charge, and wins an acquittal. Within twenty-four hours another murder takes place, one with striking similarities to the first. Thiel lures Ben to the scene and retains him as his attorney before any charge is filed. To the consternation of his friends, Ben agrees to take the case. He says that as Thiel's attorney he will be better placed to catch him in a mistake.
