Trailer

Plot summary

An alien diplomat arrives on Earth to open diplomatic ties between worlds, a contact that a superpower nation called Armenika keeps to itself. When a satellite knocks the visitor's ship out of orbit, it tumbles down into an amusement park. Geng Hao trains monkeys there, and his friend Shen Tengfei sells wine. The two find the fallen craft, take its occupant for an exotic South American monkey, and set out to teach it to perform, the work they have spent their lives on. They disagree about the animal: Geng Hao wants to sell it, Shen Tengfei wants it on stage. Armenika sends its top operative, John Stockton, to search for the missing alien.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Crazy Alien (2019)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • In March 2018 a video surfaced showing a dog being spun around in a cage and dumped into cold water during the shoot; the crew member who taped it claimed the dog was worked into a frenzy between takes to bark loudly, and actor Matthew Morrison said he was heartbroken.
  • Ning Hao bought the dog at the centre of the controversy from a canine training school he personally vetted, and it now lives in his family home; he named it "August 1st" after the founding anniversary of the People's Liberation Army.
  • The studio said the dog fell into the water on the final two takes when the equipment failed, so the crew switched to CGI and repeatedly dropped an empty cage into the water instead, and said no animals were injured.
  • Ning Hao said Crazy Alien was partly influenced by Liu Cixin's short story "The Village Teacher", and that he spent five years writing the script.
