Plot summary
Stream Hodsell, Jenny Simon and Nell Kellner are seniors at Halton School, a prestigious and expensive prep school in Manhattan, with brains, money, popularity and boyfriends. Stream loses her virginity to Chad and finds it nothing like she expected; Jenny and Nell tell her it improves with time. Jenny's mother says many women rarely climax, so Stream studies the matter in self-help books and women's magazines and listens to advice from friends her own age. Stream's mother Judy, an ex-hippie dating a South African artist, complains about difficulties with her ex-husband Dick, divorced two years and now dating a young girlfriend, Mimi. During a second sitting of the SAT, Stream talks with Henry Lipschitz Rockefeller, a musician in a garage band, until Chad pulls her away.

- Coming Soon received an NC-17 rating from the MPAA, and director Colette Burson said a board member explained the 17 cuts as resting on a double standard that judges girls' sexuality differently from boys' and disliked a girl having an orgasm on screen.
- Burson cut the film's raunchy dialogue to secure an R rating, but studios including Fox 2000 Pictures still declined to release it, and the distribution struggle sparked an outcry from journalists and critics who noted American Pie and 8mm secured R ratings more easily.
