Plot summary
Dr. Roger Summers, an ornithologist, takes his family to the cold winter retreat of Pemberton, Alaska. There, birds that migrate die for reasons nobody can name, and other disappearances go unexplained. He finds no logical answer to any of it. Dr. Tim Hughes is an environmental scientist who lives apart from others. His warnings about a worldwide freeze had been dismissed by other scientists. Roger joins him, and the two men try to alert people to a phenomenon that puts the whole globe at risk.
