Plot summary
Flint Lockwood is an inventor on Swallow Falls, an Atlantic island whose sardine economy has collapsed, leaving the locals to eat nothing but sardines. He lives with his widowed father Tim, a fisherman, and builds a device he calls the Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator, which converts water into food. Testing it, he overloads a substation and the machine rockets into the sky, wrecking the island's new sardine-themed amusement park and angering his neighbors. At the harbor he meets Sam Sparks, a New York City meteorologist whose big break the accident ruined. Then cheeseburgers begin falling from the clouds, and Flint works out that his machine is running in the stratosphere, turning cloud condensation into food.
