Plot summary
Alice, an American in London, is hit by a car; Dan, a writer who was there, walks her back from the hospital, and the two become a couple. His novel draws on her life. At a photo session for the book he flirts with Anna Cameron, the photographer, and kisses her. Alice hears the exchange and keeps it from Dan; she asks Anna to take her portrait too. Dan goes on thinking about Anna for a year. In a chat room he poses as Anna and arranges a meeting with Larry Gray, a dermatologist, at the aquarium, where Anna often goes. Larry meets Anna there by chance, and they become a couple. Months later, Larry meets Alice at a show of Anna's photographs.

- Clive Owen starred in the original stage production of Closer as Dan, the role played by Law in the film version of the play, so the two men came to the same story through different characters.

- Cate Blanchett was originally cast in the role of Anna, but had to drop out in September 2003, before filming had begun, when she became pregnant with her second son.
- Irish folk singer Damien Rice, whose "The Blower's Daughter" is the film's most prominent song, also wrote a song titled "Closer" intended for use in the film, but it was not completed in time.
