Plot summary
Clean spends his days on a garbage truck in Utica, New York, and pulls usable parts out of what he collects, repairing them and selling them to a pawn shop run by a man he knows. He lives alone in a workshop; his daughter has died. One evening, collecting near a seafood restaurant owned by Michael, he notices Michael and armed men in the middle of a drug deal. The next morning he learns that service cuts have ended the school bus route through his neighbor Dianda's area, and he offers to take her to school. He also fixes a bicycle and leaves it at her house. Dianda's grandmother Ethel asks what he wants, and he says he is trying to save himself.
