Plot summary

Nick Rinaldi lives in a New Jersey city where his father, the property developer Joe Rinaldi, owns a derelict apartment building that blocks a mixed-use project the mayor wants built before his re-election. Nick is bored at the no-show job his father arranged, so he quits and turns to crime to pay debts and support a drug habit, joining his friends Bobby and Zip when they break into an electronics store that Carl, a small-time criminal, has set up. Joe argues with Wynn, an idealistic Black alderman, about hiring more Black workers. Nick pursues Angela, a waitress raising a child alone; her ex-husband Rizzo, a young policeman, follows her and resents Nick.
