Plot summary
After the Soviet Union collapsed, Russia's laws could not keep pace with the changes around them, and a form of gangster capitalism took hold. Mikhail Khodorkovsky seized that opening. He took part in the privatization of state assets, opened Russia's first commercial bank, and built Yukos into the country's biggest oil company. His wealth brought political influence, which proved precarious. In 2003, soon after he criticized corruption in Vladimir Putin's government, the state charged him with fraud and seized Yukos' shares.
