Plot summary

Sana Valiulina grew up with a father who said almost nothing about his past. He was a Tatar who served in the Soviet army and was captured by the German Nazis in World War II. Sixty years on, she works through the diaries he kept and through personal and public archives and registries, retracing the route he traveled and trying to understand the man she knew as a child. Beside her, film archives are searched for traces of the millions of Soviet soldiers pulled into the fight between dictators and then dropped from the story of the global war, their footage reworked through colorization and other means.
