• Benoît Poelvoorde was the actor Yann Moix most wanted for the lead, and his unavailability is why the film became a French-Belgian coproduction; Albert Dupontel and Jean Dujardin were also considered before Moix cast Franck Dubosc.
• After Pathé's producers and the film's own crew received it very badly, Yann Moix thought of making a collage from royalty-free films, which he likens to Guy Debord. He and the studio finally had the already-shot film entirely rewritten and re-dubbed.
• Yann Moix compared his shoot to Lost in La Mancha, but many of his production anecdotes were later judged false or extrapolated; among the difficulties he described were a serious injury to Franck Dubosc, a near-drowning for Lucy Gordon, the weather and a feud between Pierre-François Martin-Laval and Franck Dubosc.
• Yann Moix dropped many complex shot ideas at the last minute, including an image format that was to change with each film visited by Cinéman; format and colour were later standardised, blurring the film's fiction/reality divide, and post-production became very hard because the footage could no longer be assembled into a coherent edit.
• Le Point gave Cinéman a full page of praise by Bernard-Henri Lévy, who had made himself the discoverer of Yann Moix and shares his publisher, Grasset. Télérama and Le Nouvel Observateur called the praise a "renvoi d'ascenseur", noting Moix had defended Lévy's film Le Jour et la Nuit.
