Plot summary
In 1958, Rose Pamphyle lives in Saint-Fraimbault with her widowed father, who runs a store and wants her to marry a local mechanic's son. She has taught herself to type with two fingers, and an advertisement for a secretary with insurance agent Louis Échard in Lisieux takes her there against her father's wishes. The interview goes badly, but her speed at the typewriter impresses Louis, and he hires her for a week on trial. She proves a clumsy, disorganized secretary, so Louis, a former athlete, tells her she must enter the regional speed typing championship to keep the job. He bets his American friend Bob Taylor, whose wife Marie is Louis's former flame, that she can win, and moves her into his home to train her to type with all ten fingers, with piano lessons from Marie.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Régis Roinsard had planned to cast an unknown actress as Rose Pamphyle, but picked Belgian actress Déborah François after she impressed him at her audition. She practised on a typewriter for a week beforehand and, when everyone asked if she had typed much before, did not admit it.
- Déborah François trained for six months with a professional typing coach and practised up to three hours a day, so that nothing in the film's typing is speeded up and her hands are featured in every scene.
- Hairstylist Lelia Delval gave Bérénice Bejo a red wig to wear, and the actress liked it so much that she dyed her real hair red for her next film.
