Plot summary
Niko lives in a protected valley with his mother, Oona, who tells him that his father flies for Santa. The other young reindeer tease Niko because he cannot fly and is scared of heights. Julius, a flying squirrel, tries to help him practice, and when the teasing continues, Niko slips away with his friend Saga to train somewhere quieter. Wolves spot the two of them, and the pair runs home in panic with the pack behind them. The herd's leader battles one of the wolves and is wounded. Niko hears his neighbors blame him for the trouble and decides to leave the valley to look for his father and for Santa's Fell. Julius, who can travel without leaving tracks in fresh snow, sets out after him.
