Plot summary
Carmen, a 50-year-old housewife, lives comfortably in Santiago with Miguel, her respected doctor husband, and their grown children. That winter is 1976, and a coup three years earlier has left Augusto Pinochet ruling Chile under a military dictatorship. Carmen goes to her summer house to supervise the renovation work and to have time to herself. There the town's priest, Father Sánchez, asks her to help care for Elías, a young man who belongs to the resistance, carries a bullet wound, and has taken refuge with him. Carmen once hoped to study medicine and knows something of it, and she has taken part in the church's charitable projects, so she agrees to help.
