Plot summary
Calls to Jamie Lowell's grandmother go unanswered, so she travels to Omaha and finds the apartment building beside a cornfield empty apart from two mysterious children who will not speak to her. Her grandmother has received an eviction notice. Detective Armbrister offers little help. At the grocery store Jamie meets the children again, and outside she sees a priest in the street, staring. Back at the apartment a message tells her to go home. The building manager, Jerry Ulrich, has no answers either, so Jamie searches the basement, where she finds a crop of carrots and tomatoes. Children's laughter sends her fleeing, and a man with a gun warns her to stay out. The other tenants include Tiffany and an old man in a wheelchair.
