Plot summary
John McGee, an English adventurer, reaches the Soconusco region of Chiapas in 1824 with his young wife. The two of them mean to find prosperity there and to be the first to produce coffee. What they meet instead is a state that has seceded from Guatemala's rule and is run by an interim and anarchic government, which lasts for eighteen years. His dream frustrated, John is forced to take shelter on his own farm, under the clergy's protection. Isabel's dowry is now his last chance, and he negotiates with Geronimo, who sells coffee plants, and with Julian, who sells slaves.
