Hugh McDermott
Biography
Hugh McDermott was a Scottish actor whose route to the screen ran through professional golf, and who worked in film, theater and television between 1936 and 1972. He was born in Edinburgh in 1906 and first earned a living as a golf instructor at the city's Royal Burgess Golfing Society, touring South and Central America, winning the Central America Open and helping to design a course in Guatemala. A visit to the United States sparked his interest in movies, and his earliest screen credit was Well Done, Henry, followed by the part of HM Stanley in David Livingstone. He specialized in American roles, to the point that British filmgoers seldom guessed he was Scottish, and in 1939 he acted in the West End in N.C. Hunter's comedy Grouse in June. His last film was Chato's Land (1972), and he made a final stage appearance in The Amorous Prawn in Edinburgh.
