Plot summary
Dora, a retired schoolteacher, earns her living at Rio de Janeiro's Central Station by writing letters for illiterate customers for a fee. Embittered, she has little patience for them, and some letters she never mails, stashing them in a drawer or tearing them up. Ana asks her to write to her husband, Jesus, so that their nine-year-old son Josué can meet him at last. Ana is struck and killed by a car outside the station, and Dora takes the boy in. She then decides to help Josué find the father he has never known, and the two of them travel from Rio toward northeastern Brazil, where Jesus last lived.
