Did you know?!Facts and trivia about La Haine (1995)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film's story came from the death of a young Zairian man, shot in police custody in 1993 at point-blank range while handcuffed to a radiator, an idea Mathieu Kassovitz said came to him when he heard of it.
- The film was also inspired by the 1986 death of a 22-year-old student who was badly beaten by riot police after a mass demonstration he had not taken part in; that death is referred to in the film's opening montage.
- Because of the film's controversial subject matter, seven or eight local French councils refused to let the crew shoot on their territory, forcing Mathieu Kassovitz to temporarily rename the script Droit de Cité.
- Mathieu Kassovitz, the production team and the actors moved into the banlieue for three months before and during shooting, and the film uses unstaged riot footage filmed between 1986 and 1995, with riots still erupting during the shoot.
- After the film was well received in France, Prime Minister Alain Juppé commissioned a special screening of La Haine for the cabinet and required his ministers to attend it.
