Plot summary
The Cold War is at its height in 1959, and Britain prepares its first manned mission into space. Guy Taylor, a British fighter pilot with years of flying behind him, is in command of the flight, and he has trained for it over three years. He is alone in the capsule now, short of oxygen, while the craft malfunctions. His contact with Britain is limited. He also has an unusual exchange with the United States and an unorthodox one with Tyuratam, deep inside Soviet Russia.
