Plot summary
Annie Tarrant teaches art in New Orleans, where she and her brother Ethan are still troubled by the death of their father, Coleman, killed while investigating a series of murders that echoed the Candyman legend. Professor Phillip Purcell arrives in the city to lecture on that legend and gives the Candyman a real name, Daniel Robitaille, a man born to enslaved African parents after the Civil War. Ethan blames Purcell for his father's death; the detectives on the case, Ray Levesque and Pam Carver, treat Ethan as a suspect, and their mother, Octavia, goes to the station to speak for him. When Annie's student Matthew Ellis says he has seen the Candyman, Annie calls the name herself to show the story is false.

- Virginia Madsen said Bernard Rose's planned Candyman sequel was a prequel in which the Candyman and Helen fall in love, and that it was turned down because the studio did not want to make an interracial love story.
- Rose's planned Candyman follow-up went unproduced because the studio found its screenplay too risky. The only scene from his draft left in Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh is the one featuring Professor Phillip Purcell (Michael Culkin), the surviving character from the first film.
