Plot summary
Chip Gutchel works in information technology at the sales company RTM and is married to Anne. A first prostate exam brings him intense sexual satisfaction, and he tries to reproduce the sensation, first with a bar of soap and then with a remote control. Both seem to be absorbed into his body, and the habit becomes an addiction. Nine years on, he holds it in check through Alcoholics Anonymous and hides the real nature of his problem. There he is asked to guide a new member, Russel Fox, a divorced police detective. Over dinner Russel describes his own craving for Tom Collins cocktails, and the talk sets off a relapse in Chip. Then a child goes missing at the RTM office, and Russel is handed the investigation.
