Plot summary
With the war in its last days, Berlin has fallen and Brana Brodskaya, an intelligence officer, takes charge of a Red Army detail ordered to carry a large case to Moscow. The soldiers with her are not told what the case holds, only that it must be put in the ground every night of the journey. The route crosses Poland, where the detail meets Werwolf units and local resistance fighters, and some of the squad disobey orders. Stalin is to receive the case in Moscow, and it has to stay out of the hands of anyone who wants it buried and forgotten.
