Plot summary
Lieutenant Turner commands a battalion during World War I, among them Corporal Miller, Captain Hall, Corporal Walker and Private Lewis. Private Baker, a young American, has trouble adjusting to the trenches, and a medic named Segura joins the group. The battalion holds a long stretch of conflict with the German camp opposite. A visiting officer arrives to judge the soldiers' morale, and Turner admits to no problems. Then a lookout reports that the German camp has gone dark, as though the enemy has pulled back. Turner takes the chance and orders an advance party across no man's land to seize the outpost. Inside the German camp the men find a door sealed from the outside, and behind it a passage down into a bunker.
