Plot summary
Whittier arrives at California State College hoping to make the national champion varsity cheerleading squad. She meets Monica, her friend from cheer camp, and both impress at tryouts. Head cheerleader Tina plans to take them onto the team, but fellow cheerleader Greg says Whittier will be the next head cheerleader, which angers Tina's friend Marni, who wanted that position for herself. At Dean Sebastian's urging, Tina takes Whittier under her wing. Dean Sebastian has cut funding for ballet, the book club, martial arts, music and theater, while football and cheerleading keep theirs, so much of the campus resents the squad. Whittier also meets Derek, a campus D.J. who takes an interest in her, and Tina tells her that Derek is not a boy she should date.
