Plot summary
Andy, seventeen, and his younger stepsister Piper, who is visually impaired, find their father Phil dead in the shower after his treatment for cancer. The siblings are placed with Laura, a former counselor who is raising another child in her home, a quiet pre-teen boy named Oliver. Laura says Oliver has not spoken since her daughter Cathy died; Cathy was blind and drowned in the backyard pool. Andy grows uneasy around Laura and Oliver, and notices how much Laura favors Piper. Laura asks Andy to speak about his feelings, and he admits he resented his father, who was abusive toward him and warm toward Piper. Laura talks about Cathy and says she would do anything to hear her daughter call her mum one more time.
