Plot summary
Jeff and Amy Taylor are moving from Boston to San Diego, driving a new Jeep across the country. In the Arizona desert a battered pickup nearly collides with them, and its driver, Earl, confronts Jeff at a gas station. Farther on, the Jeep dies on an empty stretch of highway. While Jeff stays with the car, Amy takes a ride from Red Barr, a passing truck driver, to call for help from a diner down the road. Jeff finds the battery cables had been loosened, fixes them and drives to the diner, where the owner and the customers say Amy never arrived. Red tells him, and then Sheriff Boyd, that he has never seen Amy. Jeff begins searching for her.
