Plot summary
Laura, a single mother, sees a therapist about trust and abandonment issues rooted in her father Jack's long habit of ignoring her boundaries. She copes by taking in abandoned animals, and nine ailing dogs and cats share her home. Jim, the man she has been seeing, leaves, and her teenaged son Henry is expelled, leaving the principal to hand Laura a list of private schools. Needing tuition money, Laura calls Jack, who is being turned out of his nursing home for dealing marijuana. He offers the money if she collects him and drives him cross-country, and she agrees, asking her sister Jojo in Los Angeles to take him in once they arrive.
