Plot summary
In Roman Britain after the conquest, Boudica shares rule of the Iceni with her husband, King Prasutagus. The Trinovantes keep an old legend of a woman warrior who will bring them victory, yet that people has embraced Roman ways and raises its daughters to speak Latin. At the market, a servant of Boudica speaks against the emperor Nero, and the remark leads to a confrontation with a Roman merchant; a woman of the Trinovantes comes to Boudica's aid. Prasutagus calms the Romans. The procurator Catus Decianus visits the royal household, where the hospitality does not please him. Prasutagus plans to offer him a gift, and is then killed by brigands. His guardsman Ciaran carries the news to Boudica, who becomes queen.
