Plot summary
Dwight Evans lives out of a derelict blue Pontiac Bonneville at the beach, scavenging food and money from trash cans and staying out of touch with his sister Sam. A police officer wakes him in the car with the news that Wade Cleland, the man imprisoned for killing his parents twenty years earlier, is about to be released. Dwight drives to his hometown in Virginia, buys a postcard for Sam, then breaks into a truck for a gun, which he ruins while trying to pry off its trigger lock with a crowbar. He parks near the prison and watches the Cleland family drive Wade away in a limousine, then follows the car to a club where they celebrate his release.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Blue Ruin (2013)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Jeremy Saulnier and star Macon Blair, friends who had made films together since childhood, decided Blue Ruin would be their last film together after the disappointing reception of their horror comedy Murder Party.
- Saulnier did not want to crowdfund the film, feeling conflicted about asking for help when donors could not share in its profits, and said that making the Kickstarter pitch video he "faced my worst nightmare" because he was camera shy.
- Saulnier has said the film's revenge plot doubles as a critique of the genre films he enjoyed growing up: violent crimes in the early 2010s "made [him] miserable" and left him unable to make "those awesome genre spectacles of my youth".
