Plot summary
Collin Hoskins is a convicted felon with three days left on his probation. He works for a moving company in Oakland, California, alongside Miles Turner, his short-tempered best friend from childhood. Waiting at a red light one night, Collin sees a white police officer shoot a black man who is running away, and the killing leaves him with nightmares and hallucinations. Miles is troubled by how gentrification is changing Oakland and by what he feels he has lost of his identity and his place there; he buys a handgun from a friend to defend himself, a purchase Collin opposes. Collin also wants to reach his former girlfriend Val again, and the two of them keep an awkward distance even though feelings remain.

- Daveed Diggs, who grew up in Oakland, and Rafael Casal, who grew up in bordering Berkeley, spent nine years writing the screenplay, aiming to fix how cinema portrays the San Francisco Bay Area, which they felt had constantly missed something.
- Diggs and Casal picked Bay Area musicians to play on the score for a sound specific to Oakland, among them Oakland drummer John Mader, who also played drums for the Broadway musical Hamilton starring Diggs.

The freestyle rap at the film's climax was written entirely by Rafael Casal, and his word choice stayed mostly unchanged for years.
