Plot summary
In 1630s Moldavia, Asa Vajda and her lover Javutich are put to death for sorcery on her brother's order. Before the spiked bronze masks are driven into their faces, Asa swears revenge and lays a curse on his line. Two hundred years on, two physicians, Choma Kruvajan and Andrej Gorobec, are crossing Moldavia toward a medical conference when a carriage wheel breaks. While the coachman repairs it, the pair explore a ruined crypt and come upon Asa's tomb, her body visible through glass beneath a cross. Striking at a bat, Kruvajan shatters the glass and the cross, then pulls the mask from the partly preserved corpse and cuts his hand. Beyond the crypt the doctors encounter Katia Vajda, who shares a nearby castle with her father and her brother Constantine. Gorobec is taken with her.
